1973年的夏天，富可敵國的石油大亨尚保羅蓋帝（J. P. Getty）的孫子約翰保羅蓋帝三世（J. Paul Getty III）在羅馬被黑手黨綁架，綁匪要求1700萬美金的天價贖金，但老蓋帝拒絕讓步，絕不付錢，老蓋帝的兒子，也是蓋帝三世的父親小約翰保羅蓋帝（J. Paul Getty Jr.）又因奢華度日而散盡家財，綁匪一氣之下割下蓋帝三世的耳朵要脅蓋帝家族妥協，蓋帝三世已破產的母親為了拯救自己的兒子，無計可施之下，請求一名前CIA探員的協助，極力跟綁匪談判，要在時限內救回兒子。

凱文史貝西在劇中所飾演的部分將重新拍攝，並由Christopher Plummer接替演出，而凱文史貝西在原劇中的角色為石油大亨保羅蓋提，花費8天的時間拍攝完成，戲份不算多，但算是頗關鍵的角色。
