官方發布了Welcome to the Second Age也確認了，電視劇的時間將設定第二纪元，而電影魔戒的時間則是在第三紀元，第二季元這段時間跨越約為3441年，第二紀元見證了瑞文戴爾精靈之城的發展，黑暗領主索倫鍛造出了著名的至尊魔戒，精靈、人類和矮人都團結起來為其而戰。

《魔戒》（The Lord of the Rings）美劇版首曝選角，《懸岩上的野餐》（Picnic At Hanging Rock）澳洲新星瑪克拉卡瓦諾（Markella Kavenagh）將以主要演員身分加盟演出。 根據《Deadline》向消息來源求證後指出，Amazon 於美國、英國、澳洲等地展開大規模的選角後，其中一名演員確定由瑪克拉卡瓦諾飾演，其角色尚未公開。但據《綜藝報》的消息來源表示，她將飾演的角色名為泰拉（Tyra）。 目前 Amazon 和瑪克拉卡瓦諾代表方皆未對此消息作出回應。
瑪克拉卡瓦諾自 2018 年演出電影《無法無天》的同名續集影集出道。同年度與觀眾見面的作品包括小說改編影集《懸岩上的野餐》以及 BBC 迷你驚悚影集《呼喊》（The Cry）。首部電影作品《My First Summer》已進入後製階段。《魔戒》將會是她的首部美國電視劇。
關於《魔戒》美劇版目前所知不多，官方僅證實故事背景將設定在「第二紀元」（The Second Age），距離電影版故事相差距 3000 多年的時間。而從先前發布的中土世界地圖看來，努曼諾爾帝國（Númenor）可能為影集版的主要舞台之一。 此劇由《星際爭霸戰：浩瀚無垠》編劇搭檔 J.D. 潘恩（JD Payne）、派翠克麥凱（Patrick McKay）擔任主編劇。編劇團隊則包括《冰與火之歌：權力遊戲》（Game of Thrones）編劇暨監製布萊恩考克曼（Bryan Cogman）、《絕命毒師》（Breaking Bad）珍妮佛哈奇森（Gennifer Hutchison），前者以顧問身份加入製作。 《侏羅紀世界：殞落國度》西班牙導演 J.A.巴亞納（J.A.
