Vietnam’s first—and the owner’s second dedicated Storm Audio theater! A detailed look at the unboxing and setup of this 7.4.5.5 Storm Audio/Wilson Audio/Perlisten home theater
Unforgettable sound, once experienced, is never forgotten. Mr. T, already the owner of a Wilson Audio/Ken Kreisel-based 7.2.5.5 Storm Theater in Taipei, deeply appreciates the Storm Audio processor’s dynamic range, rich details, and powerful yet refined low frequencies, as well as its flexible calibration options. This time, it was an honor of Haneasy International to be invited to conduct upgrading Mr. T’s Vietnam theater to the Storm MK3.
Enthralled by his Storm system in Taipei, he chose to replicate the experience here, using Wilson Audio floor-standing speakers for the main channels, Piega Coax 811 for rear surrounds, and Perlisten’s flagship S series for all other speakers. The left and right main speakers are driven by Burmester 909 MK5 mono amplifiers, with additional surround and height channels powered by Rotel and Trinnov multichannel power amplifiers. The subwoofer setup is a powerful assembly: Perlisten’s flagship D215s, paired with REL No.32, JL Audio Gotham V2 g213v2, and Paradigm Sub Persona —altogether creating an impressive 7.4.5.5 configuration.
As this is a dedicated space, subwoofer placement was meticulously optimized. Following precise positioning of the four subwoofers, we conducted Dirac Live ART calibration, testing various target curves across a range of audio-visual content on Netflix and YouTube. As expected, Storm Audio did not disappoint, as the owner enthusiastically noted:
“Wow! The density and detail of the height channels are noticeably improved.”
“Oh! This bass hits hard! The definition in the low end is excellent, and it makes the entire sofa vibrate!”
“The vocals are rich and transparent, absolutely captivating!”
Just as we were about to wrap up, a detail caught my eye: the media source for this multi-million-dollar system was running through an industrial network switch connected to a linear power supply.
“The goal is to preserve the system’s neutral sound profile,” the owner explained.
Of course, I understood cost was never the concern to him. But I had brought along a DIVA EX-7 flagship network switch for the stereo show in the city, we couldn’t resist a test. I requested, “Could we try the DIVA EX-7 to see what it does to the sound?”
Curious about the potential impact, the owner readily agreed. With no changes to volume, speaker positioning, or calibration, we conducted an ABAB comparison using the high-speed chase scene at the start of 6 Underground on Netflix, carefully swapping the network cable of the Apple TV between the DIVA EX-7 and the existing switch. The difference was astonishing:
“The improvement is immense!”
“The metallic sheen and contrast on the vehicles are remarkably enhanced!”
“The vocals feel as though they’re leaping out of the screen—right in front of us. Cars and motorbikes whiz by, seemingly inches from the ears, as if ready to barrel right over us.”
“This one stays!” the owner declared with a serious look.
Thus, the DIVA EX-7 found a new home in the theater. Much like the Storm processor, once you experience the DIVA switch, there’s no going back. In this top-tier Hi-End system, with Nordost flagship speaker、 power and HDMI cables, it’s incredible that both audio and visual quality could still take a further leap.
And excellence can always be refined. The Perlisten S7C center channel performs admirably; however, for optimal coherence with the Wilson Audio mains, we await the arrival of the Wilson Audio Mezzo Center Channel. Additionally, while the Burmester 909 MK5 monoblocks provide formidable power for the left and right channels, the current multichannel amplifiers fall short in matching their output. As a workaround, we activate the Burmester preamp circuitry to “tame” the main channels, achieving consistent levels across all channels. Ultimately, to fully release the potential of this Wilson Audio system in a multichannel setup, much more powerful multichannel amplifiers will be essential. Finally, adding another Perlisten D215s to simulate an “overhead cannon” effect could add a new dimension to the soundstage.
“So, the ultimate setup is with my new Wilson Audio center speaker, upgraded multichannel amp, and an additional D215s stacked—correct?” said Mr. T, who now owns two Storm theaters. “Looks like I’ll need to bring you back to Vietnam soon!”Great sound is a synergy—every element must be thoughtfully considered and refined. It’s a privilege to be involved in fine-tuning a system at this level, and I look forward to further perfecting this out-of-the-world home theater.
