趁著 SONY 的 GLV 搞了好幾年, 完全沒進展的原地踏步;
已經有公司將在 CES (Las Vegas Jan. 05, 2006) 展出,
以固態鐳射做為光源的背投機.

In particular it says the lasers are rated for full power/brightness to 20,000 hours! Finally a pj that can be left on without worrying about costly bulb replacements. Also it says it is instant on/off - which is very nice. Need to fire up your pj just to catch the last 10 minutes of the game? No problem.

It mentions other benefits, like offering 200% of the gamut of NTSC. However I'm not sure how that benefits things, as it'll still need to show the normal rec 709 gamut for HD for the colors to be accurate.

The one potential downside is that they mention 1,000 lumens in use with RPTV. That may be plenty for RPTV, but I wonder how that would do for a front pj application?

Then again, if by the nature of the laser you do NOT need to reduce the lumens to get a D65 calibration, than 1,000 lumens post calibration would far exceed what we're getting now from any other front pj technology post calibration (except for perhaps some very high end pieces and 3 chippers).

Any guesses on what the fill factor of laser technology is like, compared to say DLP and SXRD?

I always thought laser was more of a pie-in-the-sky technology that we wouldn't see for 5+ years. Reading about how there is a prototype laser RPTV that will be on display at CES 2006, perhaps now it seems more like we could see this technology in the mainstream in say 2-3 years? What do you guys think?

For those of you going to CES this year, it would be great if you could make a point to check out this prototype and let us know what you think.
