I personally need to see Hereafter again simply because I was totally not expecting a story about grief, but rather went in expecting an after-life story
The problem is that this movie requires a second or third watch but makes the first viewing damn near impossible.
Hereafter is as moving yet restrained as we've come to expect from an Eastwood film. It explores grief, spirituality and hope, but never gets too preachy or mawkish about it. It could have very easily become cheesy or jarring, but Eastwood's minimalist approach keeps things in check -- a feat that's all the more noteworthy given that one of his characters (Damon's) has essentially walked out of a Stephen King story.
The film doesn't really break any new ground in terms of how it presents the supernatural. Hereafter is a deeply moving, thoughtful and well-crafted drama that is supernatural enough to warrant being labeled a genre film, but might disappoint those expecting a more traditional chiller. |
