Toshiba unveils 4K TV trio, floats Cloud content portalposted on Thursday, 21st March 2013 by Steve May
Toshiba has announced three 4K Ultra HD TVs which it says willlaunch in the UK this summer. The models come in 84-, 65- and58-inch screen sizes and feature the brand's proprietary CEVO 4Kupscaling picture processor. The company has also previewed a newonline content platform, called Cloud TV. The 4K 9 Series screensmade their UK debut at Toshiba's UK spring trade show. Two werevery obviously early engineering samples, but the 84-incherappeared close to production ready. 'These are Japanesepreproduction samples, but all the designs are final,' Toshiba'sSenior product manager Glenn Zanoni told Inside CI.
Both the 65- and 84- inch screens offer Passive 3D technology, while the 58-incher is Active Shutter 3D (indicating differentpanel suppliers). Cosmetically, the sets mirror Toshiba's broader2013 TV range, with curved rather than sharp edges and a mix ofmatt and gloss finishes.
The 4K sets, along with the rest of Toshiba's Smart Full HDmodels, will feature the brand's new Cloud TV platform, describedas "a more personalised and interactive approach to TV viewing."Integrated IPTV services include BBC iPlayer, Acetrax Movies,YouTube, Netflix, Vimeo, Blinkbox and Deezer. The platform alsopromises a search and aggregation tool that encompasses the(ROVI-supplied) EPG, video-on-demand services and local contentstored on networked devices. Cloud TV also incorporates aprogramme recommendation engine based on viewing history, plussocial media interaction, including the ability to simultaneouslywatch television while following Twitter.
While the sets offer four times the resolution of Full HD,Zanoni expects the consumer emphasis to be firmly on thecapabilities of the brand's CEVO upscaler rather than any native 4Kcontent. "The CEVO processor has been redefined with a primaryfocus now on upscaling sources to 4K," he says. 'Obviously there'sa lot of development happening on the native 4K content front, butright now it's all about maximizing the available content outthere, whether that be from Blu-ray or HD broadcasting; that'swhere Cevo Engine is focused." Toshiba says that the newUHD-capable processor not only increases fine detail but alsoexpands colour gamut.
Toshiba was unable to confirm retail prices just yet, but Zanonisays: "The indication is that the screens will be extremelycompetitive..."
