Pioneer Q2 profit tumbles on plasma TVs,cuts f'cast

By Kiyoshi Takenaka
TOKYO, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Pioneer Corp <6773.T> posted an 80 percent fall in quarterly operating profit after slow plasma TV sales offset robust demand for its car electronics products, and it cut its annual outlook to below market expectations.
Underscoring its flat TV woes, Pioneer cut its plasma TV and plasma display shipment target by 22 percent to 560,000 units for the current business year, just 11 percent of Panasonic maker Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd's <6752.T> target of 5 million units for the same period.
It also said it planned to halt production at one of its plasma display production lines some time in the next business year and would not go ahead with building a new factory.
The production halt would cut annual plasma panel output capacity by 12 percent to an equivalent of 850,000 42-inch panels.
Pioneer, in a capital alliance with Sharp Corp <6753.T>, enjoys healthy profit margins at its auto electronics unit, which offers car audio and car navigation systems.
But its plasma TV operations have been overshadowed by larger flat TV makers such as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd <005930.KS> and Sony Corp <6758.T>.
For the year to March, Pioneer cut its operating profit forecast by one-third to 10 billion yen ($87.16 million), falling short of a consensus for a 12.5 billion yen profit in a survey of 14 analysts by Reuters Estimates.
The new outlook compares with a 12.49 billion yen profit a year earlier.
"Our new plasma displays launched globally from this summer have been highly praised in the market for their picture and sound quality as well as for their design," Pioneer President Tamihiko Sudo told a news conference.
"But their sales have been missing our target. Given the circumstances, we have decided to shelve the plan for building a new plasma display production site."
NO WITHDRAWAL
Sudo said that although Pioneer's plasma business is expected to remain unprofitable in the year starting April 2008, he is not considering withdrawing from the sector.
Pioneer announced last month it would sell about $362 million worth of new shares to Sharp and work with the major liquid crystal display (LCD) TV supplier in developing DVD players, car electronics and displays, the latest move by Japan's electronics makers to form alliances to better compete with global rivals.
Pioneer is the world's sixth-largest plasma TV maker, while Sharp ranks No.3 in the global LCD TV market behind Samsung and Sony, according to DisplaySearch.
Operating profit at Pioneer, battling with Matsushita, Samsung and LG Electronics Inc <066570.KS> in the $16.8 billion global plasma TV market, was 939 million yen in July-September, versus a 4.61 billion yen profit a year earlier.
On a net basis, it booked a loss of 2.4 billion yen, compared with a 3.55 billion yen profit a year earlier. Sales increased 6.3 percent to 200.5 billion yen. |
