1) update your PS3 to the newest firmware release
2) Check if already enable DVD upscale in PS3's video configuration
3) If still no luck, rip and copy that DVD title to your own DVD-R disc and try again.

I think that means use 1080P in PS3 but output DVD for 480P .
But definitely PS3 can enhanced the picture quality for DVD.

Although you watch DVD movies by PS3 and it do output by HDMI , but the actual resolution still only 480P
Just some detail PS3 will make it better , that's why you will think that's not 480P , it's better .

not just better. it's indeed much better because of the outstanding 1080 upscaling algorithm done inside PS3 box

no wonder I can get a damn good quality by PS3 !
Even better to watch DVD than by CRT , due to large-size LCD TV makes a feel like theater

what do u mean the actual resolution?
Have u ever heard a product called line doubler ?

Not only PS3 but also some amplifiers have such function to upscale your DVD to 1080 resolution, which means that you could get more detail and beautiful quality-picture

Actually it is physical algorithm by Interpolation, alough it is not as good as original 1080P , but much better than DVD quality

Dear Frank and Joe are right . PS3 really make DVD much better than my DVD player .
Thanks for everyone's explanation . I love PS3 more and more ! I think that maybe update the firmware to 2.5 will also improve the quality by playing DVD , but I'm still afraid that  will block the original DVD due to they want to block the RBD~~
