Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB Hard Drive Is World's LargestMadana Prathap 20 Oct 2010
Western Digital Corporation (WD) has announced that it has started shipping 3 Terabyte hard disk drives. These will offer the maximum storage capacity seen in a single internal HDD so far. The new 3TB and 2.5TB drives are the latest additions to the WD Caviar Green product line of SATA hard drives. The massive size is made possible using 750 GB-per-platter areal density and Advanced Format (AF) technology.

According to WD, these hard drives will support the continuing demand for increased capacity in external storage and advanced PC applications. The WD Caviar Green 2.5 TB and 3 TB hard drives are designed for use as secondary external storage and next-generation PC storage in 64 bit-based systems. Unlike most normal desktop drives, these WD drives feature a 64 MB buffer, much like the Seagate Barracuda XT 2TB. As manufacturers use the decimal (SI system) and not binary to calculate, 3TB will not mean 3072 GB - it will actually be 278 GB lesser, at 2794 GB (meaning 2.73 TB if you use the normal "1024" number for calculation).
Though not available in India yet, Seagate already has a 3TB hard drive (FreeAgent GoFlex Desk) in the market although that is an external drive. That drive does not have an areal density as high as this WD drive, which means Seagate had to use more than 4 platters. Seagate's more recent Barracuda XT 3TB is eagerly anticipated but not announced in India yet. Samsung is expected to release its own 3TB drive soon, too.
WD Caviar Green drives are claimed to be an eco-friendly storage solution with WD GreenPower Technology. This is meant to reduce power consumption, lower operating temperatures, increase reliability and decrease acoustic noise (for quiet operation). WD Caviar Green hard drives are covered by a three-year limited warranty, and will be available in India later this year (that is, before 2010 ends in the next two months). Below are details of the drive capacity, model number and MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) of the two new Western Digital hard drives:
Caviar Green 2.5 TB - WD25EZRSDTL - Rs. 8,300
Caviar Green 3 TB - WD30EZRSDTL - Rs. 10,700
"WD remains a leader of hard drive capacity and low power innovation. With our WD Caviar Green drives, we enable energy-conscious customers to build systems with the highest capacities that deliver the optimal balance of system performance, ensured reliability and energy conservation," said Sushil Bandi, Country Manager for the Indian Subcontinent, Western Digital. "Customers will be able to take advantage of this breakthrough capacity point now for secondary external storage in legacy 32-bit systems that run on Microsoft Windows 7/Vista platforms."
These drives can be used on Windows XP/2000 as well, as long as the "GPT" system is used for partitions created, instead of the familiar old MBR system. Also expect most current file-system tools to fail on the new drive, that 32-bit Windows cannot boot from a 3TB partition (although smaller partitions can do so) and that making RAID arrays with this drive would have special requirements. According to WD, hard disk drives with a storage capacity of more than 2.19 TB, currently present barriers for PC hardware, firmware and software. Western Digital has published an information sheet for more information on solving the 2.19 TB drive barrier.
To satisfy the new set of requirements of which users must be aware to successfully integrate larger capacity drives, WD is bundling its WD Caviar Green 2.5 and 3 TB hard drives with an Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI)-compliant Host Bus Adapter (HBA), which will enable the operating system to use a known driver with correct support for large capacity drives. |
